St. John Pastoral Council Meeting June 5, 2006 (Agenda I) The meeting was opened with a prayer. The May minutes were approved. Council members in attendance: John Bryan, Jeannie Carbo, Denise Diegel, Mike Fisher, Rosalie Gardner, Mary Mussari, Mike Oster, Peggy Rager, Bob Repsher, Fran Rock, Janet Tenney, Steve Torbeck Council members absent: Ralph Arnold, Tom Greene, Terry Jones, Becky Martin, Joe Rankin, Paul Rock, and Frank Tontala New council members: Dean Ditman, Debbie Middleton Staff in attendance: Fr. Kevin Mueller, Fr. Leo Patalinghug, Fr. John Robbins, Agnes Geraghty School Board President: Tom Witmer New interim administrator: Fr. Patrick Carrion Fr. Kevin introduced Fr. Patrick, our new interim administrator who will begin his assignment in July. His most recent assignment was in the Office of Clergy; he has been a priest for 23 years. He has had 2 full time pastoral assignments and has been in several parishes that were experiencing transitional issues. Parishioner concerns: Jeannie Carbo met a couple at the Ministry Fair who were still concerned about the soap products used in the church bathroom. They do not want our church to support companies who support Planned Parenthood, but instead support only Pro-life companies. Jeannie asked them to forward the website which gives details about these companies. They also would like to start a Natural Family Planning class at St. John. Fr. Leo said that we already have this class in conjunction with our Pre Cana program. We can put that information in the bulletin. OLD BUSINESS: Tom Greene sent an email to Fran Rock, resigning his council position as well as his position as Chairperson of the Finance Committee; he sited family and work obligations. Fr. Patrick will appoint a new chairperson as soon as possible. Carnival Report – A report from Jenny Scott, Carnival chair, was distributed. Fran reported that the carnival would probably make about $15,000 this year, but all of the numbers were not in yet, so a more formal report will be given at a later date. The carnival had some one time expenses this year which affected this year’s profit. At this year’s Carnival, there was not a good representation of volunteers from all the various ministries of the parish. Apparently there was some confusion as to whether this was a PTF sponsored function or a parish sponsored function. The intent of the Carnival is to bring the parish together in a family friendly environment and raise money for the parish. Fran and Fr. Leo will meet with Jenny to discuss the vision of the Carnival for the future. Several people questioned how the proceeds from last year’s Carnival were distributed; we will request a report from George Hinkel. Jenny would like to thank all of this year’s volunteers. The 2007 Carnival will return on Memorial Day weekend. Outreach & Evangelization – No report. Religious Education – Jeannie Carbo reported that Becky Martin and Paul Gallagher are still discussing better ways to communicate and coordinate speakers, etc. for the parish. School Report - Tom Witmer reported for Pat Brink that the school received the official Re-accreditation letter from Middle States. The school will soon work on plans to implement recommendations from the Middle States committee. Tom also reported on Pat’s analysis of why students have withdrawn from the school. The primary reason is that families have moved. Some are home schooling; one needed added resources for a student with dyslexia, and another wanted a Gifted & Talented program. The school budget is based on 515 students and 516 are enrolled for next year. Tom also reported that the School Board welcomed new member Darlene Bromwell. The All Day Kindergarten committee put together a detailed survey regarding all day kindergarten, facilities and other alternatives. The results of the survey will be shared over the summer and at Back to School night in the fall. Development – No report. Liturgy – Rosalie Gardner reported that the committee met on May 8th. The ushers will be educated to be more proactive to stop people from making noise during the readings and the Consecration. Jeannie Carbo will update the songbook. New Eucharistic ministers were trained. The Liturgical Ministries Fair held on the weekend of May 20/21 had a very disappointing turnout. Plans for the ministry for the Hearing Impaired are underway. The Arts & Environment committee wants to make the Narthex more interactive by possibly displaying Religious Education work or showing ways to pray the rosary, or detailing examples of good manners at Mass. There was also discussion about better ways to dismiss the children for the Liturgy of the Word. New microphones were in place for the lectors. There was discussion about possible recording of homilies; we will have to consult the priests and have further discussion about this topic. Denise Diegel suggested that we follow through on Msgr. Art’s recommendation that someone from the Spanish ministry be appointed to the Pastoral Council. Rebecca Maurio, who ran in the most recent election, would be a logical choice. Fr. Kevin or Fr. Patrick will handle this appointment. Denise also was appealing on behalf of World Vision, an ecumenical Christian charitable organization, who helps “adopt” children in developing countries. They would like to have a table in the Narthex. The council agrees that is a worthy cause, but would recommend that the Parish staff make that decision. Management & Finance – Fran Rock reported for this committee. The 2005-2006 offertory collection is budgeted for $30,700 per week, but the actual through 6/1/06 was $29,646, so it is a weekly shortfall of $1,054 which equals $52,000 per year. Expenses are slightly ahead of budget on a net basis. The projected year end excess of expenditures over revenue is $72,000. The Capital Campaign revenue is ahead of expectations. Loan repayment to the Archdiocese is on schedule at $25,000 per month. The budget for 2006-2007 is almost 95% complete, indicating a net loss in the range of the current year. Additional analysis is ongoing. Fran indicated that we need further information from George Hinkel about The Portico revenues. NEW BUSINESS: Jeannie Carbo introduced the newly elected council members, Dean Ditman and Debbie Middleton as well as our returning elected members, John Bryan and Janet Tenney. Mike Fisher said that a parishioner wondered if we had any other times for confessions; she can’t make Saturdays because of work commitments. Fr. Leo said there are confessions on the first Friday of the month and by appointment. MEETING ADJOURNED.
