ST. JOHN PASTORAL COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES JUNE 3, 2002 Msgr. Art Valenzano opened the meeting with a prayer. The new members of the council were introduced and the May minutes were approved. Council Members in Attendance: Bob Andrews, Joe Cinquino, Tom Greene, Terry Jones, Mike Oster,Peggy Rager, Fran Rock, Paul Rock, Mike Rodgers, Pat Scheper, Frank Tontala, Dawn Walsh, Clolita Williams, Gail Young, and Ken Yuhas Council Members absent: Dave Street, Jason Fitzgerald, and Joe Rankin Staff in Attendance: Fr. Brian and George Hinkle Guests: Anne Nevin, Tom Rodgers, Charlie Swinderman Parishioner Concerns None Old Business ============ Master Plan 2003 Terry Jones stated that we will break ground on the new church this week. The budget looks good. The area around the construction will be fenced off for safety. Religious Education At the last meeting Bob Andrews presented the expenditure budget; he will meet with Paul Gallagher, George Hinkle and the committee to discuss funding of those expenditures. Msgr. Art mentioned that the parish subsidizes about $130 per child for all involved in the Religious Education Program and St. John School. Development Mike Oster stated that Development has 3 responsibilities: Annual giving (Stewardship), the Capital Campaign and Planned Giving. The second phase of the Capital Campaign will begin soon. Colleen Hattrup will assist in organization of the campaign to raise the final $3 million. Liturgy Fr. Brian distributed a report from the committee on behalf of Joe Rankin. A special effort has been made by the committee to make all ministries available to everyone. We would like to reach out to non-practicing Catholics. The recent parish survey will be on the Website in the next month. Outreach & Evangelization Frank Tontala discussed the new issue of The Evangelist; its focus will be on the Religious Education Department and new teachers. A new addition of the Ministry Handbook will be printed in July. The highlight of this year has been the introduction of the Hispanic Ministry. St. Vincent de Paul is developing a 4 year plan. The 2nd Women’s Prayer breakfast is scheduled for February 2, 2003. The Website has become more active, especially in Life Teen and The Edge. Please submit new ideas for the Website to Frank. The nursery is still looking for a suitable home. Management & Finance George Hinkel presented the Budget. Paul Rock mentioned a 4% increase in the offertory; he is confident that the year will go well if everything goes according to plan. Paul said that we’ve been running ahead; there’s always a fall off in the summer, but we expect to finish ahead this year. This will be the last “normal” year for a couple of years because of the building of the new church. Religious Education is our largest expense. Gail Young asked if we could request donations for The Catholic Review. Fundraising ideas were discussed. The Budget was approved. Sesquicentennial Committee Msgr. Art said that Becky Martin has developed 10 subcommittees, and that some kind of “event” will take place every month, such as a Gala Celebration at Martin’s in the spring and a parish picnic at Union Mills, culminating in the Dedication of the new church in September 2003. The Pictorial Directory committee is interviewing companies. In the coming year we will inform parishioners monthly of the history of our parish and provide pictures, etc. A consultant suggested that we need to do a better job with our year end report and also have stories about baptisms, Perpetual Adoration, etc. Mike Oster suggested “third party” testimonials would be interesting as well. New Business ============ By-law change: Ken Yuhas explained the history of the by-law change. There was a motion at the last meeting that the pastor should be able to appoint council members who have already served their term limits. We acknowledged the fact the Council is an advisory group. Pat Scheper thought that new blood needs to come to the council periodically. Clolita Williams stated that we should have the ability to pull in expertise when needed. A vote will be taken at the next meeting. Announcements Msgr. Art thanked the members of the Council and the committees where the majority of the work happens. A special “thank you” was expressed to Paul Rock and Terry Jones. A special forum on the recent crisis in the Church was held recently, attended by 160 people. Tom Zirpoli and an Archdiocesan representative were present. There will be a gathering for Fr. George after his last mass here. We will have 2 new seminarians; one is Tyson Wood, a military chaplain, who recently became a Catholic. Perpetual Adoration is going well. Meeting adjourned. JOHN PASTORAL COUNCIL MEETING, 2ND SESSION MINUTES FROM JUNE 3, 2002 ELECTION OF NEW OFFICERS Gail Young asked for nominations for the Office of President. Frank Tontala nominated Ken Yuhas, and Mike Oster seconded it. Ken Yuhas was elected as President. Ken Yuhas asked for nominations for the Office of Vice-President. Joe Cinquino nominated Gail Young and Bob Andrews seconded it. Gail Young was elected as Vice-President. Nominations were solicited for the Office of Recording Secretary. Fran Rock nominated Peggy Rager and the nomination was seconded. Peggy Rager was elected as Recording Secretary. Nominations were solicited for the Office of Corresponding Secretary. Peggy Rager nominated Joe Cinquino, Gail Young seconded the nomination. Joe Cinquino was elected as Corresponding Secretary. BY-LAW VOTE Gail Young made a motion to pass the by-law change. Fran Rock seconded the motion. The revised by-law (Article V Section 4) was passed. Ken Yuhas set up a meeting for new council members. The meeting ended with a prayer.
