There are several endowments which are established for the parish; two of which are under the care of the Catholic Family Foundation which is coordinated from the Archdiocesan Development Office: The St John School Endowment Fund and The Walter and Anna Hackett Family Fund. The former was established by the parish and the latter by Mr. Walter Hackett. Each year the parish receives a benefit from these endowments for the purpose of tuition assistance.
The Catholic Family Foundation is an excellent way for anyone to make a donation to the Church, which has lasting effects beyond the initial donation. The principal of the fund stays intact and can develop even further with the income from the fund supporting that endeavor or ministry for which it has been earmarked. You may wish to consider beginning an endowment to honor someone as well as support that ministry which is very passionate for you.
If you would like to have more information on establishing an endowment please contact Colleen Hattrup on the parish staff at 410-876-2248 x 218. The parish’s Development Committee will be meeting in September to plan further how best to explore more endowments for the parish’s ministries.

Urge congress to oppose embryonic stem cell research: The U.S. Senate will vote very soon on several bills regarding embryonic stem cell research. One of them should be opposed. Two others deserve strong support. The Maryland Catholic Conference asks you to contact Senators Mikulski and Sarbanes and urge them to oppose HR 810, which would overturn President Bush’s ban on the funding of embryonic stem cell research. Ask that they support S.3504 and S.2754. The Fetus Farming Prohibition Act, S.3504, makes it a federal crime to gestate an embryo in a woman’s womb for the express purpose of aborting the fetus and harvesting organs and tissues. The Alternative Pluripotent Stem Cell Therapies Enhancement Act, S.2754, would require the National Institutes of Health to support research to find methods of creating pluripotent stem cells (which are cells that can be turned into any tissue in the body) without creating or harming human embryos.
