From the Pastor

    Please join me in offering congratulations to Sister Bernadette and Paul Rock. They will receive the Archdiocese Medal of Honor at special ceremony next Sunday. The award is an opportunity for the Archdiocese of Baltimore to acknowledge the work and ministry they have given to the Church through the years. Sister Bernadette, as director and founder of Health Care Ministry in our parish; Paul Rock, as chairman and member of the parish Finance Committee for 25 years, have been outstanding in their respective ministries. Bishop Malooly, the Vicar General of the Archdiocese and our Western Vicar, will present the Medals. The ceremony will take place in the Portico and will include additional recipients from the 13 parishes in our South Central Region (Carroll and Howard counties).  

    I also offer a word of appreciation to Gay Hart and Deacon Jack Coster for the excellent work they are doing to coordinate the parish Health Care Ministry. Gay Hart is now a member of our Pastoral Staff, facilitating the Health Care Ministry.

SACRAMENT OF THE SICK: An anointing with Holy and Healing Oils, on Saturday, October 15^th during the 5:00 p.m., and on Sunday, October 16^th the Sacrament of the Sick will be administered after the 11:15 a.m. Mass.

ALUMNI NEWSLETTER NEWS: the St. John School Alumni Newsletter has been mailed! We hope you enjoy your first issue! Please take note that the deadline for the “Name the Newsletter” contest will be extended until Mid-November (November 15^th) to give more people an opportunity to participate and to equalize the varying “receipt times” created by bulk mail challenges. Extra copies will be available in the church. There is a form you can fill out in the newsletter if you wish to be placed on our mailing list and receive it by mail…and remember; you don’t need to be an alumnus of St. John to enjoy/receive the newsletter. REMINDER: Reconciliation Parent Meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 18^th or Thursday, October 20^th at 6:45 in the Portico. You may attend whichever meeting is more convenient for you. This meeting is for ALL parents who have a child in the second grade or Older Eucharist class.

CONFIRMATION 2005/2006: Letters went out last week to those who are registered. This year’s parent meetings will be held on Tuesday, November 8 and Thursday, November 10^th at 7:00 p.m. in the Portico. Classed begin on Tuesday, December 6^th and Thursday, December 8^th. OCTOBER EVENTS: This month has awesome events set up for you to have fun and learn about Christ. We made some changes to some annual events to “spice them up” a bit. Oct. 23^rd is the annual video Scavenger Hunt and on Saturday, Oct 29^th a Bonfire for the whole family at Vickie Lehr’s house. Watch the song sheets for more information.

 

BIBLE STUDY: Want to join a bible study but just can’t make it up to St. John on school nights? We have the answer. Life Teen is starting an on-line bible study in October. To sign up, email Paul at pgallagher@sjwest.org.

WISDOM CLUB CHRISTMAS TRIP … Tuesday, Nov. 29

St. John Wisdom Club sponsored trip to the Allenberry Dinner Theater. Leaving St. John parking lot at 8:30 a.m. and returning at 5:00 p.m. The cost is $65 per person and includes the show, bus, and buffet luncheon. For reservations, call Rosemary at 410-795-8491. CHRISTMAS BAZAAR 50/50 GRAND RAFFLE – $1000 minimum. This year there will be a 50/50 raffle prize that will be drawn at 4 p.m. at the Bazaar. During the last week of October, each family will receive 6 raffle tickets in the mail. The tickets may be returned through the school office, the religious education office, or the Parish Center. LADIES AUXILARY – Knights of Columbus: A special presentation from the ladies auxiliary committee of the Maryland State Council will be made at the next social meeting of the Knights of Columbus at the Portico on Tuesday, October 18 at 8:00 p.m. All parish members, friends and relatives are invited. Outreach

THE DEER PARK LIONS CLUB, will collect used eyeglasses for recycling in developing countries. The eyeglasses will be distributed to those in need by Lion volunteers and other organizations hosting optical missions in developing countries.  Look for the Lions Recycle for Sight boxes near the doors of the church on the fourth Sunday, October 23.

ST VINCENT de PAUL/ADOPT-A-FAMILY PROGRAM: even though it’s still autumn, our thoughts are turning to the Lord’s Birthday and our Adopt-A-Family Program. We would like to identify persons who wish to adopt an entire family in order to provide them with more time for budgeting and shopping for the families’ gifts.
