From the Pastor

    Thank you for your prayerful and generous response to the appeal for the victims of hurricane Katrina. Additional opportunities to help are available locally through the Community Foundation of Carroll County, Catholic Charities and Catholic Relief Services. I am very pleased that our parish school is in the process of making room for two students from New Orleans who were displaced by the storm. In the midst of this tragic situation, there are many opportunities for good.

    This weekend we continue to prayerfully remember the victims and rescue workers and all the families of 9/11. Let us always and often pray for those who serve our country in the military, in the police forces, firefighters and public safety officials.

PERPETUAL ADORATION URGENTLY NEEDED! We need to find a replacement for our Sunday 3:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. adorer. If you are willing to spend one hour each week with the Lord at that hour, please call the parish center at 410-876-2248 as soon as possible. God will surely reward you for your sacrifice.

CHILDREN'S CHOIR is looking for singers! The children's choir is for students in the 4th grade and up. The choir sings at the 5:00 p.m. Saturday Liturgy on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month. OUR PARISH IS SEEKING an experienced organist/keyboard musician to provide music for funerals. This person will serve as the primary musician for funerals at St. John. Availability and flexibility are key, as are musical skill and awareness of the liturgical principles of sacred music in the context of funeral Masses. GROCERY CERTIFICATES PROGRAM: Please support the school through purchasing gift cards for Kohl’s, Boscov’s, and local grocery stores. There is no additional cost involved but the school makes 5% from all sales. They are available through the school office and before school.

LOOKING for TEENS: Life Teen is St. John’s high school age ministry. Together as one body in the Catholic Church, we grow in holiness, have fun, and meet new friends. We go on retreats, have Life Teen nights after the 6:00 p.m. Mass and ultimately just enjoy life with Christ always as our focus. THE K of C SOCCER SHOOTOUT … Saturday, Sept. 17

Beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the Four Seasons Sports Complex, the St. John Knights of Columbus is sponsoring this annual event for all children and young adults to age 18. WISDOM CLUB MONTHLY MEETING … Thurs., Sept. 22

Mass will be celebrated by Msgr. Art at Noon in the Church, then back to the Portico for lunch, our meeting and guest speaker is St. John parishioner Lothar Boczek, who will present slides on 'Capitols of Europe.' Mr. Boczek gave us such a wonderful presentation in January; you are not going to want to miss this one. Please remember to bring your brown-bag lunch. Dessert and beverages will be provided. We always welcome new members.

 

MARRIAGE INVESTMENT COURSE … Beginning Sept. 24

And running through November. All married couples are welcome to join us for this five-session opportunity to strengthen your marriage and your faith. The first session features dinner at the Portico with an entertaining presentation on the interaction between different personalities in marriage. The final session is a married couples dinner date at Mt. St. Mary’s with a candlelit visit to the Grotto. WISDOM CLUB RETREAT …Thursday, October 13 

From 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Bon Secours Retreat House in Marriottsville. Members will meet for a day of prayer, meditation and reflection. Our moderator, Msgr. Art, has planned a very insightful message for us entitled, 'Walking with Jesus.' The price of the retreat is $25.00 and includes lunch. Transportation is by private automobile. ST. JOHN BIBLE STUDY … Beginning mid-September

The fall and spring sessions will be the 24-week Great Adventure-journey through the Bible on tape narrated by Jeff Cavins. Materials include a Bible Time-Line, workbook and study questions. CURSILLO WEEKEND RETREATS: If you are looking for an authentic Catholic lay spiritual retreat, consider participating in the Cursillo Movement of Baltimore. Grow in discipleship to Christ Jesus by attending a weekend experience. Men’s weekend is October 27 - 30. GRIEVING? St. John is offering a 9-week spiritually-based program for those who are grieving the loss of a loved one. Facilitators are trained and using a book entitled “The New Day.” Meetings will be Wednesdays from 7:15 – 9:00 p.m. in the St. Theresa Room, beginning September 7^th – November 2. THE KNIGHTS of COLUMBUS CAR RAFFLE TICKETS will be sold after Masses on the following weekends: Sept. 10/11, and Sept. 24/25. Proceeds benefit the K of C state scholarship fund and the local Westminster council #1393.

Please continue to help minister to the poor in Carroll County by remembering that next Sunday, the third weekend of the month, we observe Food Sunday. Please bring your donations of non-perishable food to church and place in the baskets by the doors. We especially need donations of canned meats, stews, spaghetti sauce, canned pasta meals, jelly, powdered milk, canned fruit and bottled juices. We also need paper goods, such as toilet tissue, baby diapers, paper towels, etc. Thank you so much for your continued help and generosity!
