From the Pastor

The following is an update on the status of the seminarians who have been serving in our parish the past couple of years.  Congratulations are in order for Deacon David Whitman of the diocese of Charleston, SC. He was ordained a deacon on Saturday, April 24^th. After a summer assignment in his home diocese, he will be working in our parish on weekends beginning this fall. Deacon Michael McMahon will complete his formation at Mt. St. Mary’s this week. This will be his last weekend in our parish as a deacon. He will be ordained to the priesthood on June 26^th, in his home diocese of Providence, RI. Please join me in thanking him for his service to our parish and in congratulating him on his upcoming ordination. Hopefully he will return to St. John’s to celebrate a Sunday Mass for us sometime in the future.

Seminarian Jim Sorra will complete his pastoral year with us this summer. He will return to St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore to complete his studies and preparation for the priesthood. He will serve our parish on weekends, beginning this fall. He is scheduled to be ordained a deacon next spring. Seminarian Tyson Wood will continue his formation at Mt. St. Mary’s and serve our parish on weekends. Tyson is scheduled to be ordained a deacon this winter. Deacon Michael DeAscanis will complete his formation in Rome this summer. He will be ordained a priest on June 26^th in Baltimore. He will celebrate his First Mass at St. John’s on June 27^th at 11:15 a.m. Please continue to keep all of these men in your prayers.            May God bless you,

 

 

 

MOTHER’S DAY SPIRITUAL BOUQUETS are available at the doors of the church. Mother’s Day intentions will be remembered in a novena of Masses beginning May 9. You may place the offering envelope in the collection basket or bring it to the parish office.

THE KNIGHTS of COLUMBUS would like to give each mother a Marigold on Mother’s Day. They ask that the youngest child be allowed to present the marigold to their mother on behalf of all the children in the family.

SCHOOL SPIRIT WEEK … Monday, May 3 – Friday, May 7

Maryland Monday; Tropical Tuesday; Wacky Wednesday; Tropical Thursday; and Freedom Friday. Students are to wear their regular uniforms, but may accessorize for school spirit week.

 

REMINDER: Grocery Certificates, Kohl's & Boscov’s Gift Cards are available in the front of school each morning and in the school office. The school makes 5% of the total sales.

PRACTICE for FIRST HOLY COMMUNION will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the church on the following days:

At least one parent must attend with their child.

 

HOME STUDY PARENTS! The last meeting for Home Study will be Wednesday, May 5^th Please make sure that your child attends so that books can be checked and credit given for this year. If your child cannot attend, you must call the Religious Education Office to setup a time for you and your child to come in to make sure all work is completed.

CONGRATULATIONS to all our young people who received their First Holy Communion this weekend and last weekend. We pray that you will always stay close to Jesus in the Eucharist.

 

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL will be the week of June 21. We are in need of 4 more teachers, an adult for craft, snack and babysitting, as well as other areas. Please call the Religious Ed. Office if you can help.

 

 

 

VOCATION AWARENESS NIGHT … Sunday, May 2

Fr. Gerry Francik, Director of Vocations for the Archdiocese, will celebrate the 6:00 p.m. Mass and stay for the Life Night. Several men and women Religious will join Fr. Gerry. 

TRIP to SIX FLAGS … Tuesday, June 15

Life Teen will have an end of the school year trip. The cost is $27.00 per person and is due by May 9 to get the discounted price. Give your money to Jordan or Scott. The whole family is invited!

YOUNG APOSTLES: We would like to extend our gratitude to all the 11th and 12th graders who helped us this year as Young Apostles. From 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. in the parking lot behind the school. We will have a campfire and tons of fun. Bring a friend!

HEALTH CARE MINISTRY … Wednesday, May 5

The next monthly meeting will begin with quiet prayer in the Adoration Chapel at 1:00 p.m., followed by a meeting in the parish center. All parishioners are invited to join us. 

 

ANNUAL GROTTO PILGRIMAGE … Thursday, May 6

Join the Wisdom Club for this annual pilgrimage. Msgr. Art will celebrate Mass in the Grotto Chapel at 10:30 a.m. followed by lunch at the Cozy Restaurant. The cost is $15 per person. Transportation is by private automobile. Deadline for reservations is May 3 by calling Irene at 410-848-0489.

 

SPAGHETTI DINNER/SILENT AUCTION … Sat., May 8

SPEND a DAY at the TRACK … Saturday, May 15

For the 129^th running of the Preakness Stakes. Ushers are needed to assist patrons during the all-day event. It is a great way to see the race! Volunteers will receive a free golf shirt, baseball cap and lunch. In addition, the Preakness staff will make a donation to the St. John Building Fund for all volunteers over the age of 18. K of C ANNUAL GOLF OUTING … Friday, August 20

At the Links at Gettysburg. The cost is $100 per player with all proceeds going the St. John Youth Ministry. There will be many more “Hole in One” prizes and many other awards. 150^th ANNIVERSARY CERAMIC TILE:  The 6” square tile shows a gold metallic representation of our Sesquicentennial logo and detailed images of the three churches. Cost is $10, and may be purchased in the parish office, Mon. – Fri., from 9 a.m.– 4 p.m.

MEMORIAL BRICKS can be purchased from April 2 through June 12. You can honor a person or family member or memorialize a loved one. The costs of the bricks are: $75 for 4 x 8 and a limited number of 8 x 8 for $150. 4 x 8 forms are available at the parish office; please call Kathy Duex at 410-848-4469 for an 8 x 8 form. The bricks from the last campaign will be installed this spring. All proceeds go toward furnishing the church.

 

PARENTS of COLLEGE AGED STUDENTS: As we begin to prepare for Life Teen’s 10 year anniversary kick off on July 24 & 25 we are trying to locate young people who have participated in Life Teen. 2004 BAKER-YINGLING-SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: The Community Foundation of Carroll County is accepting applications for the 2004 Baker-Yingling Scholarship. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide children in St. John’s basketball programs, academic scholarships to high school or college. Applications are available in the Parish Center.

ROSARY WALK to GROTTO of LOURDES … Sat., May 8

Father Jack Lombardi, chaplain of the National Shrine Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, in Emmitsburg, will lead the annual “Walk with Jesus and Mary”. Beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the Basilica of Saint Elizabeth Anne Seton Shrine, followed by the Rosary Walk at 10:15 a.m. The walk will last approximately 1½ hours. Pilgrims will have an opportunity at attend Holy Mass followed by procession and crowning of Our Lady at the Grotto. Families and individuals are welcome to bring a picnic lunch.
