From the Pastor

    Congratulations to the Men In Black (the Basketball team made up of local priests and seminarians, including the high scoring power forward, Father Brian and nimble point guard Seminarian Jim) on their victory last Friday. The game was played with a capacity crowd at the Westminster High School Gym. The halftime show featured a crowd-pleasing martial arts demonstration led by our resident Black Belt, Father Leo and talented young members of our parish. One young member of our parish commented that Father Leo’s Break Dancing Show was awesome. What a wonderful opportunity to promote vocations to the priesthood and religious life, in a fun filled, family atmosphere. I want to thank all who played on the team that represented our parish. I am particularly grateful for their good sportsmanship and, allowing the MIB to win was a special treat. Special thanks goes to all the participants, and the many volunteers who helped with the refreshments, and all who attended. Please continue to pray for vocations.

HOME STUDY PARENTS! The last meeting for Home Study will be Wednesday, May 5^th Please make sure that your child attends so that books can be checked and credit given for this year. If your child cannot attend you must call the Religious Education Office to setup a time for you and your child to come in to make sure all work is completed.

 

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL will be the week of June 21. We are in need of 4 more teachers, an adult for craft, snack and babysitting, as well as other areas. Please call the Religious Ed. Office if you can help.

 

 

 

VOCATION AWARENESS NIGHT … Sunday, May 2

Fr. Gerry Francik, Director of Vocations for the Archdiocese, will celebrate the 6:00 p.m. Mass and stay for the Life Night. Several men and women Religious will join Fr. Gerry. 

 

THE EDGE NIGHT (You Are What You Eat) with Fr. Leo has been moved to June 20^th due to Mother’s Day. Take this time to show your mother how much she is appreciated!

BLESSINGS CLOSET: St. Vincent de Paul is asking for your help to assist us in supporting Shepherd’s Staff Blessing Closet. Each weekend during the month of May, please bring in the following items and put them in the baskets near the doors of the church. Most Needed: Laundry detergent, disposable diapers, bath tissue, shampoo, deodorant, soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes. Also needed: Paper towels, napkins, tissue, all purpose cleaners, trash bags, feminine supplies, baby care items, light bulbs, and liquid food supplements. These items will be delivered to Shepherds Staff to be distributed to needy families in the Westminster area. Thank you for your continued generosity.

STAND TRAINING … Monday, April 26

From 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. in the hall (old church). This training is for anyone who will volunteer in a parish or Archdiocesan program and has not yet attended a “STAND” training.

 

FILIAE MARIAE BOOK CLUB … Tuesday, April 27

NEW YORK CITY BUS TRIP … Saturday, May 1

We depart St. John at 6:00 a.m. and return approximately 10:00 p.m. The cost is $49 per person, which covers the bus, and light snacks for the ride up. Come join us for an exciting day to the Big Apple! For reservations call Paul in the Religious Ed Office.

KNIGHTS of COLUMBUS BREAKFAST … Sun., May 2

From 8 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Please join the Knights in the school cafeteria for a great breakfast including; pancakes, French-toast, eggs and more. Adults are $4 and children are $2. This will be the last breakfast until September. We appreciate the support you have given. The proceeds from each of the breakfasts are used to benefit the St. John Community.

 

ANNUAL MAY PROCESSION … Sunday, May 2

Procession will begin at 1:00 p.m. from the school cafeteria. St. John Ladies Sodality invite all parishioners to participate in this special day to honor our Blessed Mother Mary as we crown her Queen of Heaven and Earth. First Communicants may wear their First Communion attire. All participants should meet in the cafeteria at 12:45 p.m. for the procession. HEALTH CARE MINISTRY … Wednesday, May 5

The next monthly meeting will begin with quiet prayer in the Adoration Chapel at 1:00 p.m., followed by a meeting in the parish center. All parishioners are invited to join us. 

 

ANNUAL GROTTO PILGRIMAGE … Thursday, May 6

Join the Wisdom Club for this annual pilgrimage. Msgr. Art will celebrate Mass in the Grotto Chapel at 10:30 a.m. followed by lunch at the Cozy Restaurant. The cost is $15 per person. Transportation is by private automobile. Deadline for reservations is May 3 by calling Irene at 410-848-0489.

 

SPEND a DAY at the TRACK … Saturday, May 15

For the 129^th running of the Preakness Stakes. Ushers are needed to assist patrons during the all-day event. It is a great way to see the race! Volunteers will receive a free golf shirt, baseball cap and lunch. In addition, the Preakness staff will make a donation to the St. John Building Fund for all volunteers over the age of 18. K of C ANNUAL GOLF OUTING … Friday, August 20

At the Links at Gettysburg. The cost is $100 per player with all proceeds going the St. John Youth Ministry. There will be many more “Hole in One” prizes and many other awards. 150^th ANNIVERSARY CERAMIC TILE:  The 6” square tile shows a gold metallic representation of our Sesquicentennial logo and detailed images of the three churches. Cost is $10, and may be purchased in the parish office, Mon. – Fri., from 9 a.m.– 4 p.m.

MEMORIAL BRICKS can be purchased from April 2 through June 12. You can honor a person or family member or memorialize a loved one. The costs of the bricks are: $75 for 4 x 8 and a limited number of 8 x 8 for $150. 4 x 8 forms are available at the parish office; please call Kathy Duex at 410-848-4469 for an 8 x 8 form. The bricks from the last campaign will be installed this spring. All proceeds go toward furnishing the church.

 

PARENTS of COLLEGE AGED STUDENTS: As we begin to prepare for Life Teen’s 10 year anniversary kick off on July 24 & 25 we are trying to locate young people who have participated in Life Teen. 2004 BAKER-YINGLING-SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: The Community Foundation of Carroll County is accepting applications for the 2004 Baker-Yingling Scholarship. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide children in St. John’s basketball programs, academic scholarships to high school or college. Applications are available in the Parish Center.

ROSARY WALK to GROTTO of LOURDES … Sat., May 8

Father Jack Lombardi, chaplain of the National Shrine Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, in Emmitsburg, will lead the annual “Walk with Jesus and Mary”. Beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the Basilica of Saint Elizabeth Anne Seton Shrine, followed by the Rosary Walk at 10:15 a.m. The walk will last approximately 1½ hours. Pilgrims will have an opportunity at attend Holy Mass followed by procession and crowning of Our Lady at the Grotto. Families and individuals are welcome to bring a picnic lunch.
